Inpatient Behavioral Health Hospital

Industry: Healthcare

The Challenge - Located in the Metro New Orleans area, this partially completed healthcare facility was left unfinished since Hurricane Katrina halted construction in 2005. The new developer re-envisioned the space as a behavioral health hospital to address the dire shortage of mental health services in the region.

Following the hurricane, hundreds of healthcare facilities were lost and at the time of redevelopment there were only 17 inpatient mental health beds across the metro area. Sequence Studio joined the project to support remedying this crisis by transforming the dormant site into a 36-bed behavioral health hospital to provide, a safe, functional space for adults requiring acute inpatient care in a region still recovering from a disaster over a decade later.

Our Role - Sequence Studio expertly managed FF&E planning and interior design to support health and healing within this highly specialized medical space.

We collaborated closely with the developer, architect, and key stakeholders to ensure the creation of a first class, thoughtfully designed environment that prioritizes patient comfort and well-being.

The Outcome - Lake Pines Hospital opened its doors in 2017 as a fully furnished, patient-centered behavioral health facility. It offers 36 beds, a well-equipped patient activity center, dedicated staff support areas, and a thoughtfully designed outdoor space intended to promote reflection and healing. The design carefully incorporated modern, durable, and research-backed materials within a bright, inviting environment aimed at encouraging therapeutic routines and meaningful interactions that help reduce feelings of isolation. Built within an existing structure, the project was delivered on a tight timeline of six months to address the urgent need for critical mental health resources in a community facing significant challenges.
